Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection that gets under the gums and into
the bone around your teeth, causing inflammation. Periodontal inflammation
leads to tooth loss and may contribute to other medical conditions such as
heart disease and stroke.
The periodontal infection must be removed and the area given a chance to heal.
There are generally two accepted treatments for this condition depending upon
the severity of your infection. We provide the first level of care,
called "scaling and root planing".
Procedure
Using specialized equipment, Dr. Sinclair removes the bacterial build-up from below the gum line. The surface of the enamel is smoothed in order to reduce the ability for further build up to occur.
Scaling and Root Planing should be followed by periodontal maintenance
appointments every 3-6 months to prevent the infectious bacteria from further
damaging the area.
